When Joey and Davis first contacted me from Singapore, they had a fairly ambitious Western Australia wish list.

Kalbarri, Lancelin and even Bluff Knoll had entered the conversation. They had also considered travelling to New Zealand, but Perth offered the mix of dramatic landscapes, manageable travel and value they were looking for.

Once we talked through the distances, outfits and style of photographs they wanted, their plans became a two-day Lancelin and Sugarloaf Rock pre-wedding shoot.

We began at Lancelin, where they wore a wedding gown and suit among the sweeping white dunes. The following day, Joey changed into a black dress for a darker and more intimate session near Sugarloaf Rock.

Two days gave us time to make each location feel completely different, without turning their photoshoot into a race across Western Australia.

From a Big Western Australia Wish List to Two Strong Locations

Joey and Davis originally considered locations stretching from Kalbarri in the north to Bluff Knoll in the Great Southern.

Both would have been incredible, but Western Australia has a habit of looking much smaller on a map than it feels once you start driving.

Kalbarri would have required extra accommodation and separate sessions for the gorges and coast. Bluff Knoll would have taken their trip in another direction entirely.

Rather than collecting locations simply because they looked beautiful, we focused on the combination that would give them the strongest variety within the road trip they were already planning.

Lancelin gave them clean white dunes for their formal wedding attire. Sugarloaf Rock brought darker tones, rugged coastal scenery and a more intimate mood for their second look.

Two locations were enough because each one had a clear purpose.

Why We Planned the Shoot Across Two Days

Lancelin is north of Perth, while Sugarloaf Rock is near Cape Naturaliste in the South West. They might both sit along the Western Australian coast, but they are definitely not neighbours.

Joey and Davis were already planning to travel south and stay in Busselton, so we built the two sessions around that journey.

They had 90 minutes of photography at each location. This gave us enough time to explore, settle into the surroundings and create a varied gallery without constantly checking the clock.

Day one was dedicated to Lancelin. Their second session took place at Sugarloaf Rock the following day, with our timing planned around the 6:23 pm sunset.

Separating the sessions also gave them room for travel, accommodation, hair and makeup, outfit changes and some actual rest between photographs.

When the timeline feels calm, the photographs usually do too.

A Wedding Gown and Suit at Lancelin Sand Dunes

For their Lancelin session, Joey and Davis chose their most formal outfits: a wedding gown and suit.

The simplicity of the dunes gave their clothing room to stand out. With very little visual clutter, every movement became more noticeable, from the shape of Joey’s gown to the contrast of Davis’ dark suit against the pale sand.

It was colder than they expected, and the sand was slightly damp underfoot. Thankfully, the wind was much calmer than it can sometimes be at Lancelin.

That gave us the freedom to move through the dunes comfortably and create a mix of wide, cinematic photographs and closer portraits of the two of them together.

The scale of the landscape made some frames feel almost otherworldly. The closer photographs brought everything back to Joey and Davis.

According to the official Lancelin Sand Dunes visitor guide, the dunes are approximately 1.5 hours north of Perth. For a photoshoot, I treat Lancelin as a destination rather than a quick stop between other plans.

Planning Around the Drive Back From Lancelin

The photography session lasted 90 minutes, but Lancelin still took up a large part of the day.

The drive from Perth is approximately 1.5 hours each way, before allowing time for hair and makeup, changing outfits, reaching the dunes and stopping along the way.

It’s also worth thinking about the return journey before you leave Perth.

After walking through soft sand in the cold, most couples are ready for a proper meal. By the time you return to the city, some restaurants may be closing or no longer taking bookings.

Booking dinner in advance or planning somewhere convenient along the drive makes the end of the day much easier.

It sounds like a small detail, but hungry people rarely become more romantic when dinner is still an hour away.

A Completely Different Mood at Sugarloaf Rock

The following day, the entire mood of the shoot changed.

Joey swapped her wedding gown for a simple black dress, creating a darker and more intimate look against the rugged South West coast.

We weren’t trying to recreate their Lancelin photographs beside the ocean. This session needed its own personality.

Lancelin had felt open, bright and refined. Near Sugarloaf Rock, the photographs became moodier, more textured and more artistic.

The wind had a personality of its own too.

Around the main lookout and car park, it was howling. Joey and Davis could barely hear my directions, and keeping hair or clothing under control was becoming a losing battle.

Instead of spending the session fighting the conditions, I took them to a more sheltered coastal area nearby.

Finding a Sheltered Side of Sugarloaf Rock

The sheltered area looked different from the familiar Sugarloaf Rock viewpoints, but it still gave us a beautiful coastal backdrop.

More importantly, Joey and Davis could finally relax.

We could communicate easily, create close and intimate photographs and use the natural landscape without me yelling instructions into the ocean like a slightly desperate ship captain.

When we returned towards the main car park, the wind was still howling. It confirmed that moving away from the exposed viewpoint had been the right decision.

That flexibility matters along the Western Australian coast. The location you pictured beforehand isn’t always the spot that works best once you experience the conditions.

My job isn’t to force every couple into the same viewpoint. It’s to understand how you want your photographs to feel, read the weather and find the part of the landscape that gives us the best result.

Can Windy Conditions Still Work for Photographs?

Wind isn’t automatically a problem.

It can create beautiful movement through a dress, veil or hair, giving coastal photographs a wild and energetic quality that suits Sugarloaf Rock.

But there’s a point where the wind stops adding to the image and starts taking over the entire experience.

Some couples love that windswept feeling. Others want quieter portraits where they can relax, hear my direction and not spend the whole session pulling hair from their faces.

For Joey and Davis, moving away from the strongest wind allowed the session to feel intimate and relaxed while still giving them the rugged coastal atmosphere they wanted.

What Made This Two-Location Pre-Wedding Shoot Work

The variety in Joey and Davis’ gallery didn’t come from visiting as many places as possible. It came from making clear choices for each part of the shoot.

Lancelin Sand Dunes: A wedding gown and suit, pale sand, open space and wide cinematic photographs.

Sugarloaf Rock: A casual black dress, rugged coastal scenery and a darker, more intimate mood.

Two separate days: Ninety minutes at each location, with enough time for travel, accommodation, makeup and rest.

A sunset-led itinerary: The Sugarloaf Rock session was planned around the 6:23 pm sunset.

Flexibility with the weather: When the wind became too strong, we moved to a nearby sheltered area instead of forcing the original plan.

Simple creative details: Lanterns and sparklers added something different without taking attention away from Joey and Davis.

More locations don’t automatically create a better gallery. What matters is whether each place brings something different to the story and whether you have enough time to enjoy it once you arrive.

Planning a Lancelin and Sugarloaf Rock Pre-Wedding Shoot

For couples travelling from Singapore, Lancelin and Sugarloaf Rock can work beautifully as part of a longer Western Australia road trip.

However, they need to be planned as two destination sessions rather than two nearby Perth locations.

I recommend dedicating one day to Lancelin. You can then continue south and stay in Busselton, Dunsborough, Yallingup or Margaret River before the Sugarloaf Rock session.

Your accommodation base will depend on the rest of your road trip. Dunsborough and Yallingup are particularly convenient for Sugarloaf Rock, while Busselton worked well for Joey and Davis’ wider plans.

Your outfits should also suit the landscape.

A wedding gown looks striking against the clean Lancelin dunes, but it needs to allow enough movement for walking over soft or damp sand. At Sugarloaf Rock, wear comfortable shoes for the walk and carry the shoes you want photographed.

Not every image needs to show your feet, so comfort can quietly win that argument.

Bring a warm layer too. Both locations are exposed, and the temperature can feel much colder once the sun drops or the wind picks up.

I wouldn’t recommend it. Lancelin is north of Perth and Sugarloaf Rock is in the South West. Photographing both on the same day would mean spending most of your time driving and leave very little room for delays, outfit changes or relaxed photography.

Planning the sessions across two days gives each location the time it deserves.

How Long Should We Allow at Each Location?

Not always, but the dunes are exposed and conditions can change quickly. Joey and Davis had cold weather and slightly damp sand, but the wind was relatively calm. Bring a warm layer and be prepared to work with whatever the day gives us.

Can We Still Take Photographs at Sugarloaf Rock When It Is Windy?

Yes. We can use the wind when it creates beautiful movement or move to a more sheltered area if it begins to take over the session. The best approach depends on the conditions and how you want your photographs to feel.

Where Should We Stay for a Sugarloaf Rock Photoshoot?

Dunsborough and Yallingup are the most convenient options, but Busselton and Margaret River can also work depending on the rest of your itinerary. Joey and Davis stayed in Busselton because it suited their wider travel plans.

What Shoes Should We Wear at Sugarloaf Rock?

Wear comfortable shoes for walking across uneven coastal terrain. You can carry your formal shoes and change once we reach the photography location. Comfort and safety matter more than wearing the perfect shoes for the entire walk.

Should We Wear a Wedding Gown at Both Locations?

You can, but you don’t need to. Joey wore her wedding gown at Lancelin and changed into a black dress for Sugarloaf Rock. The contrast helped the two sessions feel completely different.

Can We Use Sparklers or Lanterns in Our Photographs?

Possibly, depending on the conditions, location rules and current fire restrictions. Props must be discussed before the session so we can plan them safely and make sure they are permitted.

Two Landscapes, One Pre-Wedding Story

Joey and Davis began with a huge list of possible locations across Western Australia.

What made their final gallery work wasn’t trying to reach all of them. It was choosing two landscapes that felt completely different and giving each one enough time.

Lancelin brought the scale and elegance of the white dunes. Sugarloaf Rock gave them a darker and more intimate finish beside the coast.

The weather didn’t behave exactly as expected, but that’s part of photographing in Western Australia. We worked with the cold at Lancelin and moved away from the strongest wind near Sugarloaf Rock.

The result was a two-day experience that felt varied without becoming exhausting.
