Booking your pre-wedding photography is exciting, but if you’re travelling to Western Australia for the first time, it’s completely normal to wonder what to expect at a pre-wedding shoot.
Where will we meet? How much driving is involved? When should we organise hair and makeup? And what will the day actually feel like?
Pack water, comfortable shoes, sunscreen and something warm for after sunset. If your shoot includes multiple locations, keep everything organised in one small bag so changing outfits and moving between locations remains simple.
Western Australian weather can change quickly, particularly around the coast. I monitor the forecast and location conditions before every shoot, but keeping some flexibility in your itinerary gives us the best chance of working with beautiful light.
Every shoot is planned around your chosen locations, outfits and the kind of experience you want. A relaxed Perth session will unfold very differently from an adventurous day in Lancelin or a multi-day Margaret River escape.

By the time your shoot day arrives, you’ll know where to be, what to bring and what happens next. Your only difficult job will be deciding which photographs deserve the biggest frame.
What to Expect at a Pre-Wedding Shoot in Perth
A Perth pre-wedding shoot is the easiest option for couples wanting beautiful photographs without dedicating an entire day to travelling.
Perth gives you plenty of variety within a relatively small area. Depending on your style, we can explore heritage streets, modern architecture, gardens, beaches or quieter natural locations.

A Typical Perth Pre-Wedding Timeline
Hair and makeup → Meet at the first location → 90-minute shoot → Sunset → Dinner
Most couples arrange hair and makeup during the afternoon before meeting me at our first location.
From there, we’ll usually spend approximately 90 minutes photographing across one main location or two nearby settings. I’ll guide you through natural movement and relaxed direction while giving you space to enjoy being together.
We’ll finish around sunset, when Perth’s light becomes softer and warmer.
Once the shoot is finished, you’re free to head out for dinner, explore the city or return to your accommodation. It’s a relaxed experience that fits easily into your holiday without taking over the entire day.
A Perth session is particularly well suited to couples who:
- Have a shorter stay in Western Australia
- Prefer minimal driving
- Want an easy, relaxed experience
- Love city, coastal or garden settings
- Want time for other activities on the same day
What to Expect During a Lancelin Pre-Wedding Shoot
Lancelin offers a completely different experience.
Although it’s approximately 1.5 hours north of Perth, I recommend treating your Lancelin pre-wedding shoot as a full-day adventure. With around three hours of return driving, hair and makeup, the photography session and time spent walking through the dunes, it can be a long—but incredibly memorable—day.
The landscape is expansive, minimal and cinematic. Its white dunes create photographs that feel far removed from the city, but reaching that scenery requires more preparation and careful timing than a local Perth shoot.
A Typical Lancelin Pre-Wedding Timeline
Breakfast → Hair and makeup → 1.5-hour drive from Perth → Lancelin shoot → Sunset → 1.5-hour drive back
Your day will normally begin with a relaxed breakfast, followed by hair and makeup during the late morning.
Once you’re ready, you’ll leave Perth in your own hire car and follow the planned route north. Depending on your package and itinerary, we may meet in Perth, along the way or directly in Lancelin.
We’ll photograph around the dunes and selected surrounding areas, timing the final part of the session for the softer light around sunset.
Afterwards, you’ll make the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to Perth. I recommend planning somewhere for dinner along the way or having a relaxed meal once you return.
Adding Another Location to Your Lancelin Shoot
Including another location requires more planning because we need to consider driving time, outfit changes and the best light at each stop.
If you add the Pinnacles to your Lancelin pre-wedding shoot, it can add up to two hours to the overall day once the additional travel and photography time are included.
This can create a beautifully varied gallery, but it also turns the experience into a much longer itinerary. We’ll need to plan the starting time carefully so we can explore both locations without rushing or missing the best sunset light at the dunes.

What to Bring to Lancelin
Because the sand is very soft, I strongly recommend wearing flat shoes while walking through the dunes. Heels can sink quickly and make moving between photography spots unnecessarily difficult.
You can still bring formal shoes if you want them included in particular photographs, but flats, sandals or bare feet will be far more comfortable for getting around.
I also recommend bringing:
- Water and light snacks
- Flat, comfortable shoes for walking through the soft sand
- Sunscreen
- A warm layer during the cooler months
- A small hair and makeup touch-up kit
- A bag that is easy to carry
- Formal shoes to change into for selected photographs, if required
There is very little shade in the dunes, so preparation makes a noticeable difference. Giving the experience a full day means we can work around the travel, conditions and changing light without making the shoot feel rushed.
A Lancelin session is best for couples who:
- Want bold, cinematic scenery
- Are prepared for a long day
- Don’t mind approximately three hours of return driving
- Are comfortable walking through soft sand
- Have access to a hire car
- Want their photography experience to feel like a road trip
- Have enough time for the additional planning involved if including another location
What to Expect During a Margaret River Pre-Wedding Shoot
Margaret River isn’t somewhere I recommend rushing.
The region is approximately three hours south of Perth, and its best photography locations are spread across forests, beaches and rugged coastal areas. Rather than attempting it as a quick day trip, I recommend making Margaret River part of your Western Australia holiday.
Most couples travel down the day before their shoot, check into their accommodation and give themselves time to settle into the slower pace of the South West.
A Typical Margaret River Pre-Wedding Timeline
Explore and settle in → Hair and makeup → Meet at your accommodation → Forest or coastal locations → Sunset dinner
On the morning of your shoot, you can enjoy breakfast and a relaxed start before visiting your hair and makeup artist. Alternatively, a mobile artist may be able to come to your accommodation.
I’ll meet you at your accommodation or another agreed meeting point before we head to our first location.
Travel between Margaret River locations can take approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on your itinerary. That travel time needs to be considered when deciding how many locations and outfits to include.

Because you’ll be driving your own hire car, you’re free to continue exploring after the shoot. You might book dinner overlooking the coast, return to your accommodation for a quiet evening or simply enjoy the drive back together after sunset.
Rather than feeling like one long photoshoot, Margaret River becomes part of your holiday.
A Margaret River session is ideal for couples who:
- Want both forest and coastal scenery
- Prefer a slower, more immersive experience
- Can stay in the region for at least two or three nights
- Want their pre-wedding shoot to feel like a romantic getaway
- Are comfortable driving between regional locations

Why I Recommend Hiring Your Own Car
Although I’ll guide you to each photography location, I recommend that overseas couples arrange their own hire car.
Having your own vehicle gives you flexibility before and after the shoot. You can travel from hair and makeup appointments, keep your outfits and personal belongings nearby, stop for food and continue exploring once our photography has finished.
It also means your holiday doesn’t have to revolve entirely around the shoot.
Western Australia is best experienced with the freedom to stop when something catches your eye—even if it’s just a bakery that looked suspiciously good from the road.

What Should You Bring to Your Pre-Wedding Shoot?
A little preparation will help you stay comfortable and enjoy the experience.
Bring:
- Comfortable shoes for walking between locations
- Water and light snacks
- Sunscreen during warmer months
- A jacket or warm layer during cooler months
- A small touch-up kit for hair and makeup
- Any accessories needed for your second outfit
- A bag that is simple to carry
- Your phone and portable charger
- Your biggest smiles and a willingness to enjoy the adventure
Avoid bringing multiple large bags unless they’re necessary. The easier it is to move between locations, the more relaxed the session will feel.
What Happens If the Weather Changes?
Western Australian weather can change quickly, particularly around the coast and during winter.
I’ll monitor the forecast and assess how the conditions may affect your locations, travel and photography. Light cloud, wind or even a small amount of rain doesn’t automatically mean the shoot needs to be cancelled. Those conditions can create beautiful movement, softer light and dramatic skies.
If conditions become unsafe or unsuitable, we’ll discuss the available alternatives. That might mean adjusting the timeline, changing locations or moving the session where possible.

Do We Need to Know How to Pose?
Absolutely not.
You don’t need to memorise photographs from Pinterest, practise poses in your hotel room or worry about what to do with your hands.
I’ll guide you throughout the session using natural prompts and simple direction. Sometimes I’ll help you settle into a more intentional portrait. At other times, I’ll encourage you to walk, talk, laugh or simply spend a quiet moment together.
There’s room for both beautifully composed portraits and the unscripted interactions that show who you really are.
The best photographs usually happen when you stop thinking about the camera and start focusing on each other.
